Eligible groups

NHS Scotland follows advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI).

The JCVI recommends that people have both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines this year if they are:  

  • aged 50 or over 
  • a staff member working in a care home for older adults 
  • a frontline health or social care worker 
  • aged 5 to 49 years with an eligible health condition 
  • aged 5 to 49 years and are a household contact of someone with a severely weakened immune system 
  • an unpaid carer aged 16 years or over 
  • pregnant

Some people are eligible for the flu vaccine only. This includes: 

  • people aged 16 to 49 with an eligible health condition, including well controlled asthma 
  • nursery, primary or secondary school teachers or pupil-facing support workers in local authority or independent settings 
  • prison officers or support workers who deliver direct front-facing detention services 
  • children aged 6 months to 2 years with an eligible health condition 
  • children aged 2 to 5 years (on 1 September 2022 and not yet at school) 
  • primary and secondary school pupils
  • non-frontline NHS workers
